Kiser Library Update - December 4, 2014

Hello Roaring Readers!  What a great couple of weeks in the library!  As 2014 winds down, I have had to chance to reflect on some of the things we have been doing in the library this year.  Our book commercials are so much fun and you all are reading some wonderful books.  We have come a long way from the iPhone commercials to using our green screen app and the iPad.  I can't wait to see what you all do next with book commercials.  I have some fun things planned for 2015 in the library so stay tuned for more information soon!

Working with your teachers is one of my favorite parts of being a librarian.  Fourth and fifth graders, we got to do some great research using the Chromebooks for Native American projects and explorer projects.  Here are a few pictures of YOU, Chromebooks and research in action:

Fourth graders, I know you created projects at home based on your library and classroom research. You teachers told me you did an outstanding job!

Fifth grade, here are just a few exampled of Explorer projects you made using the iPads and the BuddyPoke app.  You all worked so well researching, working with your group and creating your iPad presentations about your explorer!  Great job!

Check back soon to view some more book commercials and KEEP READING!  You all are the BEST!

Hello Kiser Roaring Readers and any fellow librarians/educators/friends!  I am so excited to be getting ready for a new school year!  Yes, it's true.  I used to love shopping for back to school supplies, a first-day-of-school outfit, and getting back to school with my friends!  So, as the 2014-15 school year is about to begin, I wish all of you great first day and a wonderful new school year.  Kiser students, I have lots of great new books to share with you!  See you soon in the library!

Andragogy? What is it? Should I care?

Well, I am posting again.  Kiser Roaring Readers, if you are reading this, you can either keep reading and learn something new, or you can visit the blog another time.   The post doesn't really have anything to do with you as student readers, but that is okay, you can keep reading if you want.  I just participated in a training session all about andragogy.  It's a big word for how adults learn.  Basically, whenever I have to share technology ideas with our other Kiser teachers, I have keep in mind how adults learn.  Just like students, teachers keep learning, even as adults.  We want to know why we are at a training session, how it will benefit us, and why we should care about it.  Each time I plan professional development for our school, I will keep this in mind.  I don't want to waste anyone's precious time with professional development that isn't purposeful and important.  So,  here's to andragogy...how adults learn.  Something new for this adult learner to keep in mind!

App Smashing Reflection - Get ready Kiser Readers!

Wow!  What a busy morning.  I have been attending Pinncale XIX training with other Gaston County teachers this week and it has been a blast!  We just spent the morning learning all about App Smashing and how to bring this method of integrating technology into instruction to YOU, our precious students.  I just read an online article titled, "APP-SMASH:  The BEN BLOOM FIST IN THE SAMR GLOVE."  Basically, it is all about how educators purposefully select and combine APPS for the students to use, encouraging learners to move beyond the basic remembering and understanding level of the curriculm.  Teachers need to think about how technology can be purposefully integrated into content instruction to best prepare students for their roles in the real world!

I am so excited to tell you that we will have a total fo 31 Chromebooks in the library in the fall and we are going to use them, plus a new iPad, to explore technology and combine learning with building your technology skills.  I am going to be thinking about App Smashing and how best to teach you library and reading skills and 21st Century technology skills that will be just right for you!

Enjoy your summer, keep reading, and be ready to get back to blogging and book commercials in August!

Blog Post #2

Hi Kiser Readers!  What a great week we had using the iPads at school and creating our own original poetry.  I am so proud of each of you!  I want to say a big, "Thank You!" to Mrs. Engbarth for all her help this week, too.  Next week, we are going to continue with our technology lessons and focus on how to use our school Google accounts with Google Chromebooks!  Each of you are also going to have the chance to create some more poetry, so I can't wait until next week!

I have a super-short book commercial for you - it is for Jack Prelutsky's My Dog May Be a Genius, which is a great collection of poetry.  These creative poems feature figurative language, like onomatopoeia, like we talked about in the library this week, as well as funny subjects of the poems who have all sorts of experiences to share with us, the reader!  We have several copies of Mr. Prelutsky's book at the library, so visit the 800 section of the library and check one out soon!  See you at school...
